Pets in the studio

Often I am asked if we can include the family pooch in a newborn portrait session.

And it IS possible!

We just need to stick to a few tiny rules, to ensure your baby is kept safe at all times. Which is always my priority in the studio.

  • Pooches stay on a lead just outside the door of the studio.

It is important for my newborn clients, that the studio is kept clean and free of allergens at all times. So, dogs must be kept outside to limit the dog hair coming in the studio. When your pooch is in the studio, we use a different fabric backdrop for them to lie down or sit on, which is thoroughly washed afterwards.

  • Dog and Baby photos are composited together. Always.

No matter how well trained and well behaved a family pet is, in the studio, it is still my responsibility to keep your baby 100% safe at all times. In order to do this, I always composite baby and dog photos together.

This means that I photograph your dog separately to the baby, and then use Photoshop to digitally create one photo of the two of them together.

Basically, I am keeping your dog well away from your baby at all times. This takes away the risk or potential harm due to your dog knocking over your baby, or worse.

And that’s it! Two rules for a successful dog and baby photo in a professional studio!

A few other notes for you though:

  • Bring along some dog treats, to assist in the photo shoot. They go a long way towards a successful portrait!

  • The studio has a very tiny additional fee for including family pets in your newborn baby photos. ($25)
